As the number of people who experienced the war is decreasing year by year, we should recognize the tragic war and the preciousness of life, and pass on to our grandchildren the wish for permanent peace not only in Japan but also in the world without repeating the war.

In July of 1944, we took over the war preparations against the Soviet Union from the troops stationed at Anxi Station in Peotanjiang Province, Manchuria (now northeastern China), and devoted ourselves to counterintelligence.
While we were waiting to board the ship, we spent a lot of time in swimming training, not only swimming but also jumping from the transport ship in case of disaster, evacuating to the surface of the sea from a rope ladder, assembling bamboo poles on the surface of the sea, etc. Even the hammer soldiers who could not swim were able to stay afloat.

On August 15, the headquarters of the 31st Infantry Regiment and the 1st Battalion boarded the cargo ship Eiji Maru and sailed in an escort formation of 19 transport ships and 7 sea defense ships. The fresh air from the blowers on the deck did not reach the rooms in the lower part of the hold, and we began to feel exhausted from lack of oxygen. However, we were able to breathe fresh air only when we went on deck for anti-submarine surveillance.
At that time, the Taiwanese waters were in a dangerous situation due to the appearance and disappearance of enemy submarines, and we continued to move southward, focusing on the detection of anti-submarine torpedo tracks.

On September 4, we arrived at Kaohsiung Harbor, loaded supplies, and departed Kaohsiung Harbor on September 6 after assessing the situation.
At midnight, my squadron took up our positions as the first on duty to find the torpedo tracks. I will never forget how good the air tasted after being out of the hold for three days.
The night sky was clear and the Southern Cross shone brightly, and luminescent insects glittered on the surface of the sea, and the view of nature on the ocean was an indescribably good feeling, but at the same time there was an eerie silence.

Even with strict anti-submarine surveillance, it was extremely difficult to detect torpedoes on the surface of the sea at night.

At 3:30 a.m. on September 6, the Eiji Maru suddenly experienced a strong tremor and caught fire at the same time, receiving an enemy torpedo in the bow.
Our squadron was originally on deck for anti-submarine surveillance duty, but when we were ordered to leave the ship, we were afraid to jump into the water, so we just wandered left and right, unable to make our own decisions. In a matter of minutes, the second enemy torpedo hit the center of the ship and the No. 23 hold exploded.

I don't know how many minutes passed after the explosion before I regained consciousness, but when I came to, I saw that my life vest was definitely on, and my consciousness gradually became clear. The stern of the Eiji Maru caught fire and stayed afloat. I swam hard to avoid being caught in the sinking, but by dawn the remaining stern exploded and the Eiji Maru sank into the East China Sea.

As dawn broke, we could see all four sides of the ship. On the surface of the sea, there were people who had died in battle with their backs floating, people with no heads and only their torso attached to life jackets, and wounded people holding on to pieces of wood. Some of the soldiers said they could see the land of Taiwan and wanted to swim, but I told them not to swim, that it would only exhaust their strength and that help would come soon.
After about four hours of floating around with pieces of wood and hatches, the destroyer "Hibiki" appeared and we were finally relieved.

After we were rescued and landed in Kaohsiung, a roll call revealed that the captain of the 181-member 1st Company had been killed in action, 81 had been killed in action due to the sinking of the Eiji Maru, 49 had been wounded, and 51 were in sound condition.
The unit was formed by replenishing the local troops on the ground in Taiwan, but they were equipped with no shoes and wore clogs, no backpacks, and water bottles made of bamboo.
However, I was reassured that I carried a brand new Type 99 rifle.

After the regrouping was completed, we had no time to rest, and on September 10, we proceeded southward through the devilish Bashi Channel toward our destination, Luzon Island, while the air and sea were controlled.
We had trained and prepared for death as war is supposed to be like this, but this time we experienced a step-by-step actual battle without using any weapons and without seeing the enemy, resulting in many deaths.

We had trained together since I joined the army as a first-year soldier, and we had made friendships and vowed to be together when we died in battle.
An hour after leaving Kaohsiung Harbor, we passed by the area where the Eiji Maru had sunk tragically. The surviving members of the squadron, without being invited, went on deck and headed south toward the unseen ocean, crying and offering a silent prayer for the souls of the eight men.

Today, Japan is the world's second largest economy and has achieved peace and prosperity through its amazingly rapid reconstruction.
I believe that the foundation of the Japan we know today, more than half a century after our defeat in the war, is the strength of our many fallen comrades, and I pray for their repose.
