Xiantan County, Hunan Province, China (birthplace of Mao Zedong), May 1945
In this rugged, rice-growing region, at dawn after a night march, we sat down on a narrow street and most of the soldiers took a nap on the spot. I stood at the entrance to the farmhouse with my finger on the trigger and my eyes on the ground.
It was not an unusual sight in this area, but thick moso bamboo covered the eaves, and through the bed in front of me I could see the steam rising straight up from the tea kettle like a thin wisp of smoke. They were still warm when I put my hands on either side of the bed, and I had no time to pick them up, so I had no choice but to leave them there and their parents ran away.
It was the first time I had ever seen such a situation, and I temporarily lost consciousness and stood still.
It was just before dawn, and there was no noise. The next moment, I was in a frenzy, thinking that I had been asked by the Emperor to be his assassin.
I was praying that she wouldn't wake up and that my warriors wouldn't come looking for her. My parents must have been in a panic behind the bamboo bushes because they kept staring at me with guns drawn.
I was in a hurry, so I scrambled around the house, but nothing happened, and after about 10 minutes I pulled out.
The news of the war was all about the big picture, and the common people were either not worthy or were suppressed and not allowed to be heard in general.
One night I was standing on patrol, and in the shade of the mountains in front of me, a large army of the enemy had gathered and were raising flares all night long. There was a boy of about five years old who was left alone in a house, laughing loudly in the middle of the night. He looked like a handicapped child who could not even walk.
One of the soldiers said, "Your parents will come for you soon with Chinese soldiers," and I was worried that my parents might be hiding in the dark corner of the house. The mother came into the house without any sign of fear, picked up her child, and was talking rapidly while giving him a bowel movement, probably relieved that he was safe.
This should not have happened, but it seems to have happened in Okinawa when the U.S. military landed, and in Iraq these days.
We know that war destroys lives and property, but while advocating the cause of peace, on the other hand, they are researching and increasing the production of weapons of mass murder. We hear that they are developing and possessing enough atomic bombs to wipe out the earth several times.
It is difficult for the leaders to change the spirit of true peace, but no one likes war. Will the cycle of ethnic conflict and peace continue?
In the age of material civilization, we need the progress of spiritual civilization.

本当の戦争の話をしよう
昭和20年5月 中国湖南省シアンタン県（毛沢東生誕地）
起伏のある稲作専業地帯で、夜の行軍の夜明け方に狭い路上に腰を下ろしその場に大方の兵はそのまま仮眠をとった、私は寝付けずにいる時、なんとなく家捜しを思いついた、単身行動は禁じられていたし、友軍がいること又好奇心や怖さも知っていたが慣れも手伝い引き金に指をかけ辺りを警戒しながら低い姿勢で農家の入り口に立った。
当地としては珍しい光景ではないが太い孟宗竹が軒に被さり、正面のベッド越しに細い煙のように茶釜から真っ直ぐ上る湯気が見える、手前のベッドには夕顔みたいな長い枕があり、その中央には3歳くらいの男の子2人だけが深々と眠っていた、ベッドの両端に手を当てると未だ温もりがあり子供を抱き出す余裕もなく止む無く置き去りにして両親は逃げたと思われる。
始めてのこんな様子に一時我を失い棒立ちとなった。
辺りは夜明け寸前、何の物音もしない、次の瞬間、天皇より殺し屋を頼まれた身だと殺気だったが、いやいや敵方の子とはいえ抵抗なく可憐な幼児を殺して何になるかと生気に戻り我が愚かさもよぎった。
むしろ目を覚まさないでくれと祈る気持ちと家捜しに乱暴な戦友達がこないでくれと願う気持ちであった、銃を構えた私が見詰めて去らないので両親は竹藪の奥で気が気ではない思いであろう。
急ぐので家中を引っ掻き回したが何もなく１０分くらいで引き揚げた、この幼児は今60歳くらいか、往時の話に驚いたり喜んだりしているだろう、当然の事をしたので命に恩人とは言われるはずもない。
戦争ニュースは大局的なことばかりで庶民的なものは価値ないものか抑えられ一般的には聞かせないのか、心境の急変甚だしい。
或る晩歩哨に立つ、前の山陰には敵の大軍が集まり照明弾を一晩中上げ気勢をあげていた、ある民家に残された5歳くらいの男の子が夜中に一人高声でゲラゲラ笑っていて気味が悪い。見れば立ち歩くことも出来ない障害児のようであった。
兵の一人が’今に親が中国兵を連れて迎えに来るぞ’と言う、また’暗い家のすみに親が潜んでいるのではないか’と不安の中に銃声もなく無事朝を迎えた、間もなく母親一人で怖がる風もなく家に入り我が子を抱き上げ用便をさせながら何やら早口に話していた、無事で安心したと思われる、この晩は一睡も出来なかった筈、夜明けを待って兵隊付き添いできたと思う親子生死の心境。
あってはならないことだが、米軍上陸の沖縄、この頃のイラクでもと思われる。
戦争は人命財産の破壊と知りつつも平和の為と大義を唱えながら、一方は大量殺人兵器研究や増産を進める、今世界の原爆は地球を何回か全滅させる程開発保有をすると聞く、その分だけ余計な負担が国民にかかる。
指導者達の真の平和精神改革を切望するも難しいであろう、さりとて戦争を好む人もいないだろう。民族紛争と平和の繰り返し続くのか。
物質文明時代に精神文明の進歩が欲しい
